Ok I am making a game for real life friends and I need help polishing the idea to a finished state. Short short version is that there is an evil team that have captured all of the Celebi sans 2 and are screwing with the time line. I am making them have characters in all three timelines. I have the past and present done but I wanna do a "game" for the future.
So in the mareep book they describe a popular game show on the internet about the Rangers. I wanna do this with the gym leaders and make it a game loosely based off of the 80s movie The Running Man and this years hit Nerve. I still don't have a title for it but the premise of the game is this:
Criminals and wrong doers are fitted with a collar and cellphone/watch that will give them objectives to accomplish to reduce their sentence. The participants can choose not to do objectives back to back but are forced into at least participating in a way (problem 1). The gym leaders are given a territory to "defend" and the participants need to complete the objectives whilst battling with leaders and each other (problem 2). Objectives are as follows:
Retrieve an item (valuable/theft)
For lack of a better term, kidnapping a person or Pokemon (think like a "rescue the vip" sort of game.)
Claiming a territory through tagging a building or area
Most of these objectives are nefarious and if caught or beaten will add time to the sentence but if completed will get them off the hook sooner than usual and/or rewarded in some way. (Problem 3) Now I want to lead off saying I have yet to actually see the movie Nerve yet but plan to before I play so hopefully I can get a few more ideas for the objectives from that. I now want feedback from you guys on the three major issues I currently have.
1. What is a "fair" amount of time to go between objectives? The last thing I wanna do is railroad my players and I want them to have the chance to improve their team or do investigating on how to overthrow the power and fix the current timeline. They can't try to fight the team if they are forced into these objectives too much.
2. Do I have NPCs besides the gym leaders try and complete these objectives? In both The Running Man and Nerve, the players have 2 participants so this will be more or less a team game. The issue I have though is that my players aren't all combat characters so where do I draw the line on how many people to put them against. Do I just club the rules and have the gym leader command X amount of Pokemon for each player? That seems a little broken.
3. So the characters are incriminated for a crime they obviously didn't commit. To only reward them time off a sentence doesn't sound enticing. What would you guys feel is a just reward for doing these acts? I was thinking TMs and items like balls medicine but does that justify committing crimes? What are some other rewards you can think of?
Finally, does anyone see any glaring holes I haven't caught yet? I've been mulling this over for awhile but I feel like I'm missing critical points. I have not DMed and actual PTU game but have 3 PTA games under my belt. I feel like I could solidly run this but fear I am overlooking some key points (as in type specialist strength of the GoT specialist classes I plan to give the leaders). Any input is much appreciated.
